Shared Use Legislation Moves through the Iowa Legislature

It was a great week for the Bridging Solutions for a Healthier Iowa coalition, which includes the American Heart Association - Midwest Affiliate.

The Coalition has been championing legislation that would make it easier for schools to open their facilities to the community after hours as a place for physical activity. The Community Use – also known as Shared Use -- initiative seeks to clarify Iowa’s liability laws to address the fears that administrators may have about recreational use of school property during non-school hours. Breaking down these barriers is a critical component to giving more Iowans the access they need to get healthier.

During the week of March 2, the judiciary committees in both the Iowa House and Iowa Senate addressed legislation that would clarify the liability laws.  HSB 35 and SSB 1247 were passed unanimously by both committees.  Both bills are now being redrafted as committee bills and will be assigned new file numbers shortly.
